FAQ
What is Lumalive technology about?
-
Lumalive technology brings inert objects to life by integrating flexible arrays of multi-colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into fabrics without compromising the softness of the garments.
-
Lumalive technology, integrated in soft fabric opens a wide range of applications in the field of ambient lighting, communication and personal expression.
What is the technology behind Lumalive?
Lumalive technology features high integration of flexible arrays of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into the fabric. The integrated control unit makes it possible to change the light patterns and to show full colour animations. The control unit is programmable. The system obtains its power from a small battery pack or the mains.
Can you say something of the history of the technology?
The idea of integrating LEDs into fabric started in the “Soft Electronics” project that was initiated within Philips Research a few years ago. In our daily lives we are surrounded by fabrics. (E.g. garments, accessories, furniture, beds, carpets, curtains, flags). So the idea was to integrate electronics/devices into fabrics for a whole range of applications. From an engineering point of view this meant that a major part of the electronics had to be made of fabric, or at least had to be seamlessly integrated into fabric. As light emitting (dynamic) graphics are exciting means to express yourself or to display information, we investigated whether it would be possible to integrate LEDs into fabric. And we soon succeeded in that. In this way we created a new area of lighting applications.
Is Lumalive technology available in the market?
The first Lumalive application, light-emitting event gear, has recently been launched. This application of Philips Lumalive will be offered via the selected partners in the promotion & event industry. First distributor, Boost Products, has launched Lumalive light-emitting event gear in the Benelux countries. For further information visit the Boost Products website at www.boostproducts.nl
How is the Lumalive technology being used?
Philips Lumalive light emitting event gear is applied into the clothing of event hosts and can be programmed to display personalized text and or graphics, which makes it an attractive and appealing eye catcher for the visitor.
What is the commercial price of the Lumalive technology?
Our first application, Lumalive light-emitting event gear is a b2b application for the event industry. The commercial price depends on the market situation.
What is included in the product?
The product consists of a display panel that can be integrated into event wear, a control unit with USB connectivity to upload new animations and text, a battery that runs up to 4 hours and Philips Playlist editor software that enables you to organise your animations.
USER RELATED QUESTIONS for the light-emitting event gear
What is the power consumption?
That depends on the application. The light-emitting event gear operates 3-4 hours on one charge of the (rechargeable) Li-ion battery pack.
Can you wash it?
Cleaning is possible because of our unique way of designing the garments. First of all, the whole system is splash waterproof. If you want to clean/wash the garment, you can easily remove Lumalive components and refit it afterwards.
Is the lighting effect visible in daylight?
The lighting effect is visible in daylight but will be less on a clear and shiny day.
