Lumalive featured on Michael Jackson's "This is It" DVD
For Michael Jackson’s planned “O2 Arena tour", fashion designer Zaldy wanted something very special – a truly breakthrough idea for Michael’s stage outfit. Philips Lumalive delivered, with a ground-breaking costume that would light Michael up when he performed his iconic hit “Billie Jean.”
After extensive research, fashion designer Zaldy selected Philips Lumalive as his partner, since he felt that they were the most advanced in this field. Philips Lumalive teamed up with him and created a “lighting” outfit for Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” performance. The suit, as well as his gloves, was designed to light up to the rhythm of the song and be synchronized with the choreography, producing many colors that would create a dramatic and dynamic effect. The “Billie Jean” costume was the pièce de résistance, with a jacket, tuxedo pants, ankle socks and a single white glove that would light up thanks to Philips Lumalive’s latest LED textile technology. Not only do these new LED textiles contribute to the expression of the artist, they also create a unique experience for the audience.
“Light is important for performing. Normally the light comes up from behind the singer, but it creates a very special and emotional effect when the singer himself is lit up. Philips can do this, making any color combination in any rhythm with light,” said Zaldy.
Michael was very happy with the results: at one point during rehearsals he looked into the mirror and said: “This is everything I ever wanted!” Unfortunately, the tour never happened, and the outfit was not brought to life. However, the spirit of what could have been is revealed in Michael Jackson’s “This is It” DVD.
